The First Day of The Shaker EcoChallenge

Welcome to The Shaker EcoChallenge!

We can’t wait to get started with our first official day of the EcoChallenge. There are many exciting weeks ahead of us, and we would like to highlight a couple of tasks to get you started on your journey of environmental action.

Try going vegetarian or vegan. The start of a month can be a great time to test out a more environmentally-friendly diet. Read this article to learn more about the benefit of vegetarianism and veganism on the global environment and challenge yourself to go green for a week… or even the entire month!

If this challenge is too daunting or if you have restrictions that prevent you from going the full mile, you can implement alternative, more sustainable options in your diet. Read this article to find what you might be able to swap out for high-carbon emission foods such as beef, cheese, lamb, and more.

Want to make a sustainable purchase and start a small garden? Visit Rust Belt Riders to buy some Tilth Soil: soil that’s made from food waste, fights climate change, and supports the radical effort of growing your own food! Tilth Soil sets up a great base for a garden, where you can grow native plants or flowers and plants that support pollinators.

Old electronics contribute directly to toxic pollution in landfills. They often contain toxic substances (mercury, cadmium, beryllium, etc) that have the potential to leach into soil and contaminate the environment around them. That’s why Shaker Heights is hosting an electronics round up on April 3rd and 10th! You can stop by 15600 Chagrin Boulevard, Shaker Heights, OH 44120 to donate your old computers, electronics, and small appliances from 8am - 4pm.

Learn more about the importance of recycling old electronics here.

Each week, we will ask you to submit a picture of yourself completing a challenge for a chance to be featured on our next newsletter or website! And as usual, here is the link for the entire assortment of our challenges if these ones do not catch your eye.
