Shaker Youth LEEDs is a group of highschool students from various schools around Shaker Heights with a mission to include youth voices and perspectives in the continuation of LEED* Certification in Shaker Heights in partnership with the members of the Shaker Sustainability Committee.

Aiming to increase engagement of Shaker residents in sustainability, we created a fun and interactive sustainability challenge called the Shaker Ecochallenge inspired by the LEED certification credits. We invite you to join us on our path to making a more sustainable city where even your smallest sustainable actions and participation lead towards a brighter future!

Why LEED for Shaker Heights?

Earning LEED credits offer a way for cities and communities to become more sustainable through several different categories. These categories include natural systems and ecology, transportation and land use, water efficiency, energy and greenhouse gas emissions, materials and resources, quality of life, innovation. Within each category, LEED provides a series of requirements to meet in order to earn points within the topics as well as an incentive to earn credit in that certain category. By earning these credits, Shaker Heights will be able to become a green city that ties the community with the environment. We decided to use LEED as a foundation for our challenge because of how its requirements inspired many of our challenges. By participating in our challenge, you can be a part of the greater movement in making Shaker more sustainable through the certification of LEED credits.

Shaker Heights became the first LEED Gold city in Ohio after receiving certification in June of 2021. Read more here

What Is Shaker Youth LEEDs?

The Shaker Youth LEED Committee, started in August of 2019, is a group of high schoolers dedicated to providing new perspectives surrounding environmentalism in Shaker Heights.

  • Our first project included a presentation to the Shaker Heights Sustainability Committee in the Summer of 2020 on methods for Shaker to obtain more LEED credits. We focused on different categories on LEED Certification for Cities and Communities to develop smaller proposals and focus points specifically for Shaker Heights.

  • Last year, we launched our first annual Shaker EcoChallenge. We partnered with businesses such as 3-19 Coffee, Rust Belt Riders, and STUMP Plants to promote a more sustainable lifestyle for Shaker residents, as well as launching our website and weekly newsletter to keep participants updated.

  • This year, we focused on the removal of the Horseshoe Lake Dam. We researched the topic heavily, discussed the removal with Tori Mills on a walk around the park, attended a webinar on the effects of dam removal on communities, and more. Knowing that this was a pressing topic for many Shaker residents, we conducted a survey that ended up amassing more than 100 responses!
